MHST Parent Led Workshops - For Parents to Support Their Child

The Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) offer online workshops to empower parents and carers with tools to support their child with:

  • big emotions
  • behaviour
  • fears and worries

The online workshops focus on supporting parents and carers to support their child’s positive behaviour and to manage their child’s fears, worries and big emotions more effectively. Parents are in a strong position to make changes and to have a positive influence on their child. As parents, we all progress differently, and there is no such thing as a ‘perfect parent’. You are the expert when it comes to your child, and we aim to build on that strength.

Online Parent Led Behaviour Groups

These workshops are for parents and carers to explore strategies for supporting their child with behaviour, big emotions and self-regulation. There are up to 6 online workshops spread across 5 to 6 weeks.

The Aims of this Workshop

  • To understand behaviour as communication, and to improve parent-child relationships by supporting emotional regulation.
  • To understand what keeps behaviours going, the impact your responses may have on your child, and techniques to break negative behaviour patterns.
  • To increase awareness of children’s behaviour and strategies to support positive behaviours.
  • To increase parents’ confidence in interacting and supporting their child around behaviour.

Online Parent Led Groups for Child Anxiety

The Aims of this Workshop

These online workshops are for parents and carers of primary aged children. They give parents information and techniques for supporting children who struggle with fears and worries.

The workshops support parents who may have a child who:

  • who feels anxious or who panics
  • who experiences lots of little worries, for example, about friendships or schoolwork
  • who is fearful of a certain situation
  • who is fearful of leaving or separating from a parent

The workshops are based on a book by psychologists Cathy Creswell and Lucy Willetts: "Helping Your Child with Fears and Worries". We tailor the information and techniques during each workshop to suit your child.

You will cover:

  • psychoeducation around anxiety
  • talking with your child about how they feel
  • the effects of giving reassurance to your child
  • promoting independent behaviour
  • step-by-step plans for overcoming fears and worries
  • behaviour experiments to encourage your child to face their fears
  • problem solving

There are up to 6 sessions spread across 5 or 6 weeks. Session 4 is a 20 minute one-to-one appointment on Microsoft Teams. You will be sent the time and Teams link for this appointment nearer the time.
