They work alongside other professionals such as teachers, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, nurses and paediatricians.

Who is it for?

The team work with children and young people from birth up to 18 (19 in complex needs schools) and their families who have difficulties with everyday activities due to illness, disability or coordination skills.

Referrals

How to make a referral depends upon the area where you live.

Central Norfolk

This service supports families who live in Central Norfolk. This includes Norwich, Mundesley, Wells, Fakenham, Dereham, Watton, Attleborough, East Harling, Diss, Loddon, Acle and surrounding areas.

To be referred, children must be registered with a GP in the former Norwich, North Norfolk or South Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) areas (except children registered with Thetford GP practices who are seen by the Children's Occupational Therapy team based in Bury St Edmunds).

  • Children registered with a GP in the former West Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will only be seen by this Occupational Therapy team if referred with suspected developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD).
  • Other conditions and difficulties are addressed by the OT team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn.

First referrals must be made by a medical professional who knows your child; however, families and schools may request subsequent reviews.

Referrals should be made using the SPOR form.

East Norfolk, West Norfolk and Waveney

If you live in East Norfolk, West Norfolk or Waveney, you will need to be referred to other local community services for further support. Please find referral information at the links below:

Thetford - Children registered with Thetford GP practices are seen by the Children's Occupational Therapy Community Services based at the Child Development Centre in Bury St Edmunds.

East Norfolk (Great Yarmouth and surrounding area) and Waveney (Lowestoft and surrounding area) - Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team at James Paget University Hospital

West Norfolk (King's Lynn and surrounding area) - Children's Occupational Therapy Community Services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Requesting a Review

If your child has been seen by us before and still meets the referral criteria, you may a request a review without going back to your doctor. If their needs are related to coordination or fine motor difficulties, you will be asked to wait 12 months between referrals. This allows time for them to work on the suggestions made to them in their first appointment and improve the skills they are learning.

Please use this review request form.

Pre-Referral Information

The Occupational Therapy team have developed a pre-referral information pack, which is a programme of activity and problem-solving sheets to be used at home and school for 12 weeks before deciding if a referral is necessary. Referrals to the Children's Occupational Therapy Service must come from your child or young person's GP or other health professional in the first instance.

The pack contains guidance for school age children who have difficulties with co-ordination, general fine motor skills and functional activities.
