How Is My Child Doing?

The communication pyramid is a simple way to show how communication develops. The skills at the bottom come first and need to be in place in order to support the development of the skills higher up.

For example, a child needs to develop their attention and listening before they will be able to fully engage in play. Their understanding then develops through play. When understanding is developed, a child will be able to learn how to express themselves. Finally clear speech develops.

Communication Pyramid

Supporting these skills will provide children with the very best environment to develop their understanding and use of language. Speech and Language Therapists use this model to help them decide what speech, language and/or communication aims are appropriate for a child with communication difficulties.
