Children's Epilepsy Nursing Service

The Children's Epilepsy Nursing Service is provided to children and young people aged 0-18 years (19 years if attending a special educational needs school) who have a diagnosis of epilepsy.

Our services are open to families living in Norfolk and registered with a GP within Norwich, South Norfolk, North Norfolk and West Norfolk (excluding Great Yarmouth and Waveney).

What We Offer

The Children’s Epilepsy Nursing Service offers advice, information and support to children and young people with epilepsy and their support network.

We achieve this by:

  • Being a point of contact at initial diagnosis, between consultant appointments and during a child’s time under our service.
  • Offering an initial home visit to meet the family, providing information and education to help children and young people live well with their epilepsy. Information will include epilepsy syndrome diagnosis, safety, medication, education, monitoring and individualised support as required.
  • Providing rescue medication training to those involved in the child’s life, including educational settings.
  • Providing a point of contact to primary and secondary care, for example GPs and hospitals.
  • Liaising with other professionals from health, social care, education or other agencies involved in the child’s care
  • Providing the young person and their carers with information about transition and a joint transition clinic with the Adult Epilepsy Nursing Service.

How To Make a Referral

Referrals for the Children’s Epilepsy Service primarily come from the Children’s Epilepsy Clinics held at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn. We also accept referrals from community consultant paediatricians.

We accept requests for training from education including early years settings for children already under our care. This includes requests for Buccal Midazolam or Rectal Diazepam training from education, early years settings or activity clubs.

Priority and Conditions we Don't Provide Support For

Priority will be given to:

  • Newly diagnosed patients
  • Patients with refractory epilepsy
  • Children prescribed emergency medication who require the provision of a care plan and training to parents, carers, settings.

We do not provide:

  • A service for children and young people with a non-epileptic seizure disorder; this includes "fits, faints and funny turns"
  • A service for children experiencing febrile convulsions, unless they have been prescribed Buccal Midazolam.
