Speech & Language Therapy Training

Welcome to Norfolk and Waveney Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Services’ training page! We’re pleased to be able to provide a range of short, free introductory courses which will provide you with some simple strategies to use within your classroom straight away.  

Our mission is to reach as many schools and settings as possible so we are running each course twice a month (virtually at present) and all courses are also available as a webinar which you can access in your own time if the live training is not at a convenient time for you or you want to recap information and strategies. We also have a range of resources on our website that link to these training sessions for further information and ideas. 

Speech Sounds 

Supporting Speech Sounds is suitable for education staff working with children who have a good understanding of language but have unclear speech.   

This course can help to develop understanding of typical speech sound development and common speech errors. It gives information on how to support children working at different levels of speech sound development.

Supporting Stammering

Supporting Stammering is for adults supporting children of all ages who stammer.  

This course provides an introduction to causes, presentation and the impact of stammering. We discuss ways you can support children who stammer in the classroom and when to seek further support.

Supporting Early Communication

Supporting Early Communication is for adults supporting young children who are motivated to communicate but don’t yet use many words.

The course will help increase your confidence in recognising early developmental milestones, and allow you to support children with the foundation skills for communication such as play and attention and listening skills. There are some top tips with activity ideas for motivating children to engage in interaction. We will also discuss simple strategies you can use in daily activities to support language development all day every day.

Supporting Vocabulary

Supporting Vocabulary is for adults working with children who need extra support to, understand, learn and use new words.

This course highlights why vocabulary is so important to language learning and academic achievement, and provides some strategies you can use in the classroom. These strategies will benefit all children – not just those who find language learning difficult.

Supporting Understanding

Supporting Understanding is for adults working with children who struggle to understand questions and instructions in the classroom.

This course explains how questions can be broken down into ‘Blanks Levels’, and how understanding these levels can allow you to pitch questions and instructions in a way to maximise your child’s ability to understand. We will also discuss some simple strategies you can use in the classroom to support and develop children’s understanding of language.

Extra Help For Early Communication 

Extra Help for Early Communication is for adults supporting children who need help in engaging and interaction.

This course talks through the early stages of interaction and steps children will take when learning to communicate. It also touches on the areas of sensory and behavioural support. There are some general strategies to help children engage and understand as well as more structured approaches such as objects of reference, intensive interaction, using visuals and attention autism.

Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness is for adults working with children who have good understanding of language but are not using many words and sounds. This course can help to develop understanding of the stages of phonological awareness development and give ideas for activities at each stage.
