Sterilising Your Bottles & Equipment

A baby’s immune system is not as developed as an adult’s. Sterilising all feeding equipment helps to protect your baby against illnesses & infections. It is recommended that all equipment used for collecting and storing formula milk is sterilised before use.

You might not think it but milk provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria that could give your baby an infection. Sterilising gets rid of any nasty bacteria that could cause harm to your baby.

  • There are several ways you can sterilise your baby's bottles.

    Methods you can choose are:

    • Steam sterilising machines - Either microwave or electric.
    • Cold water sterilising solution - You will need chemical sterilisation tablets for this.
    • Boiling - You will need a large saucepan big enough for you to completely submerge whatever you are sterilising.

    Please use a set of kitchen tongs when handling sterilised items to keep them as clean as possible.

    Warning - If using boiling water to sterilise your baby's feeding equipment please be very careful and do not have your baby near the saucepan at any time.

  • Once you have sterilised your babies feeding equipment you should;

    • Leave bottles and teats in the steriliser or pan until you need them.
    • If you do take them out, put the teats and lids on the bottles straightaway.
    • Wash and dry your hands before handling sterilised equipment. If possible, you could use some sterile tongs.
    • Assemble the bottles on a clean, disinfected surface or the upturned lid of the steriliser.

    It is important that you do not contaminate the equipment after it has been sterilised. If this happens, sterilise the equipment again!

  • It is recommended to sterilise all feeding equipment each time you use it, for at least the first 12 months of your baby’s life
